The slate bar, carved with Mayan symbols, is captained by Francis, who took excellent care of our fortunate travelers (it's a tough job but…). We are told that in addition to his skills as a bartender, Francis is also quite well versed in the art of bar tricks.

The villas are decorated in rich textures and colors with comfortable furnishings, hand-woven bedspreads, carved animals, and masks set against warm wood tones.

The decor comes from Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, Haiti, Africa and California's Napa Valley.

Meals at Blancaneaux are unique and begin with fresh orange juice, oven-baked bread, and plates of fresh fruit. All of the vegetables and most of the fruit are grown at the lodge. Coppola has also imported a wood-burning pizza oven, espresso machine, and coffee roaster. In addition to pizzas and pastas, there is fresh fish from the coast, local chicken home-smoked, and wines from Coppola's Napa Valley estate.

We recommend one of the six, two-bedroom, two-bath villas along the river, which includes the villa of Blancaneaux owner, Francis Ford Coppola.

There is so much to see: 1000-ft waterfalls, Mayan ruins, pyramids, hidden caves, the rainforest, all enhanced by the experience and knowledge of the Blancaneaux guides.
