| This unique boutique hotel home to the Carmelite Convent
nuns for 252 years was slated for bulldozing in 1957 to make room for a badly
needed downtown-parking garage. In 1959 Robert Frederick Woolworth heir to the
Woolworth fortune purchased the property for $250,000 and turned it into a
deluxe hotel named El Convento. The hotel underwent many changes before being
purchased by a group of San Juan business executives who spent in excess of $15
million dollars to refurbish this treasured historic landmark. |
