This unique boutique hotel home to the Carmelite Convent nuns for 252 years was slated for bulldozing in 1957 to make room for a badly needed downtown-parking garage. In 1959 Robert Frederick Woolworth heir to the Woolworth fortune purchased the property for $250,000 and turned it into a deluxe hotel named El Convento. The hotel underwent many changes before being purchased by a group of San Juan business executives who spent in excess of $15 million dollars to refurbish this treasured historic landmark.
