| This beautifully restored Jacobean-Georgian estate was
originally built in the early 17th century for the Hampden and Lee families
(ancestors of General Robert E. Lee) and it remained in that family until
1938. |

| Hartwell House was completely restored by Historic House
Hotels and is celebrating its 10th anniversary as a hotel. There are thirty
bedrooms and suites on three floors in the main house and sixteen bedrooms and
suites in Hartwell Court, an 18th century stable block situated 100 yards from
the main house. |

| Hartwell House was visited by President Clinton during his
D-Day stay in Britain, and most recently, the Emperor and Empress of Japan
spent a private weekend at Hartwell House following their state visit to
Britain. |

| The library, which overlooks the garden, was added in
Georgian times around 1760. |
|
|
| The bedrooms and suites are superbly appointed, each with
its own private bathroom, color television, radio, and direct dial telephones.
Many of the first floor bedrooms are exceptionally large, and are named after
members of the Court of Louis XVIII, who lived in them nearly two hundred years
ago. Several bedrooms on the second floor open onto a sheltered roof
garden. |

| The dramatic Gothic staircase lined with Jacobean carved
figures leads to the thirty-one guestrooms and suites. |

| Three salons offer a wide range of health and beauty
treatments, including Swedish body massages. |

| The fitness room features all of the latest equipment. |

| Getting There: Hartwell House is two miles from the busy
market town of Aylesbury, and twenty miles from Oxford. London is easily
reached by train or car in about an hour, and Heathrow Airport is just 35 miles
away. The nearest rail stations are Aylesbury with regular service from
London, Marylebone, and Birmingham. |

| In 1809, Hartwell House was leased to King Louis XVIII of
France, who held his Court in Exile here. He remained at Hartwell until 1814,
when the constitutional document confirming his accession to the throne was
signed by him in the library. |

| The 90 acres of landscaped grounds include a lake stocked
with trout, which guests can fish, a fine collection of 18th century pavilions
and monuments, as well as the ruins of a church. |

| The Morning Room is decorated in rococo style with a
magnificent carved plaster ceiling. |
|
|
| The Soane Dining Room, designed in 1988 in the style of the
19th century architect Sir John Soane, is a magnificent setting for the
imaginative cuisine of head chef Daniel Richardson. |
This equestrian statue of Frederick, Prince of Wales, which
stands at the entrance of the house, was rescued from an obscure location
hidden by shrubbery.

| The Hartwell Spa is housed in a splendid building, in the
style of an 19th century orangery. There is a large swimming pool, whirlpool,
spa bath, steam room, saunas, beauty salons, and a well-equipped
gymnasium. |

| There are two, all-weather tennis courts located on the
grounds of Hartwell House. |
