Turtle Island

Richard Evanson, an American, purchased Turtle Island in 1972. He sought escape in the South Pacific, away from the stresses of the Western Civilization. Fiji seemed about as far away as he could go. It's charm, beauty, and the friendliness of its people was infectious, and Richard stayed.

A chartered aircraft departs Nadi for the 30-minute flight to Turtle island. The same plane that brings new visitors to the island picks up departing guests. Your arrival and departure are memorable events that the entire Turtle family wants to share. When it's your turn to leave, you'll find everyone at the dock to bid you farewell.

Some beaches are adjacent to the living and dining areas but most are secluded and private. Several are bounded on either end by high cliffs, set in a cove or protected by an outcropping of volcanic rock.

A seaside moonlight dinner, a mountaintop cocktail party, an intimate meal by lantern light on a private beach, the settings are as memorable as the fresh, gourmet food.

After a few days, most guests realize the real pleasures here go beyond what the eye can see. You'll easily surrender to the leisurely flow of the friendly, sun filled Fijian days.

Columbia Pictures, in looking for a location to shoot "The Blue Lagoon", surveyed a thousand possible sites before deciding to film the movie entirely on Turtle Island. The movie was completed in 1980, starring Brooke Shields.

There are no luxury high rises, no tennis courts, no airfields, no shopping malls. No televisions, no newspapers, no billboards. Just unspoiled natural beauty and the gentle rhythm of the tides.

The relaxing pace on Turtle Island owes much to the prepayment policy created to free each guest from all economic decisions. All meals, drinks and activities, including scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are included in your all-inclusive tarrif. The fee is all-inclusive for a very important reason. Once you arrive, you are transported out of a money-oriented society into another world. No bills to sign, no checks to cash, no monetary considerations whatsoever. No concern as to who will pick up the tab or buy the next round of drinks. A fundamental relaxation occurs.

Turtle is ideal for divers. We have stunning virgin reefs and superb visibility. There are no other divers in the water and there is no current. There are hundreds of species of fish to be found only a 20-minute boat ride from Turtle. In the deeper regions offshore, guests have spotted dolphins, tuna, pilot whales, sailfish, marlin, manta rays, and many other species of fish.

At day's end, many guests enjoy sitting under the huge banyan tree, sharing "kava" (the ceremonial drink) and song with other guests and staff.

The Blue Lagoon is as clear as new blown glass and offers spectacular displays and diversions. Living coral reefs of blue, green and yellow, called "fringing reefs" ring the island and are home to colorful galaxies of fish, from lion to angel to buttterfly fish. Squid and octopi live here too, as well as sea cucumbers rays and crabs. Don snorkel gear and go eye-to-eye with a green or hawksbill turtle.
