Villa d'Este
In 1568 Tolomeo Gallio Cardinal of Como built a Villa named Garrovo as his private residence. It was owned in succession by a ballerina and a Napoleonic General, a Queen without a crown who renamed it Villa d'Este, a Russian Empress and minor aristocracy. In 1873 it was transformed into a Hotel.
The guestrooms, the corridors, the Hall and the public rooms are decorated with antique furnishing and art works which give the hotel a palatial atmosphere.
Villa d'Este totals 161 rooms. The main house built in 1568 and known as the Cardinal's building counts 130 rooms while the trompe l'oeil masterpiece known as the Queen's Pavilion, inaugurated in 1860 has 31 rooms. In 1873 the two Villas combined into one property became Villa d'Este.
The 13 suites consist of two separate rooms, one for sleeping and the other a full-sized living room. In the main building the majority overlook the lake terrace with a view of the opposite shore. In the Queen's Pavilion the view includes the pools and looks toward the town of Como. Drapes are silk brocade. Linen sheets. Walk-in closets. Pictured above a Sitting Room.
The Veranda overlooks the lake and the gardens. It is formal and elegant (jacket and ties required in the evening). Glassed-in, windows electrically controlled disappear into the ground. In the Summer tables are also set up on the terrace.
The Grill Is informal but the ambience is cozy and chic. The menu lists an interesting variety of regional dishes with a choice of the best Italian wines. In the Summer, meals are served in the garden under the century-old plane trees.
This unique pool floating on the lake, with a built-in Jacuzzi, is open in summer time from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
There are 8 tennis courts hidden in the park above the Mosaic available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Rackets and shoes are available for rental.
The Spa is designed to make artful use of the blend of light, color and water to create the proper environment for serenity and relaxation based on Zen philosophy. It is the perfect oasis to replenish mind, body and soul. The Spa is located on the first floor of the Cardinal building and is connected to the Sporting Club by an underground passage.
