The Wauwinet
{short description of image}
The Wauwinet is located nine miles from Nantucket center on the northeast end of the island near a wildlife preserve. It is flanked by Nantucket Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The historic inn is the only one on the island where guests can enjoy both the lively surf of the Atlantic and the calm warmer waters of Nantucket Bay.

Tucked in right next door to a wildlife sanctuary, The Wauwinet is a sanctuary itself. It is white lawn chairs. It is Herman Melville on the bedstand. It is a glass of brandy by a crackling, late autumn fire. It is the diversity of spring color after the monochrome of winter. It is an urge to walk barefoot on the beach wearing your best dress. It is total privacy. It is a group of congenial friends.

Bostonians Stephen and Jill Karp, who have vacationed on Nantucket since 1969, purchased The Wauwinet House in 1986, with the aim of reviving the reputation of its "golden" period. They reopened the inn as The Wauwinet in 1988 after a 20-month, $8-million renovation. There are two private beaches—one on the Atlantic, one on Nantucket Bay, and The Wauwinet’s grounds are a fantasy of gentle dunes, sandy paths, green lawn, trailing rose vines, flower gardens and sparkling, never-ending water views.

Nantucket Island is a kind of distillation of everything that is wonderful about New England. Quaint is practically an understatement when speaking of Nantucket, and it's absolutely never considered a condescending adjective. Only on Nantucket can such descriptors as "quaint and sophisticated", "earthy and elegant" accurately define anything when used in unison.
